SonicCaption – Real-time bilingual captions and translation for videos
Hi HN — I’m Ethan, a solo developer and a language learner. I built SonicCaption because I often watch courses/videos and join meetings in languages I’m not fluent in, and I wanted something that works across sites, not just on one platform. What it is: a Chrome/Edge extension that adds live captions + translation on top of the page you’re already using (videos, meetings, livestreams, etc.). You can show bilingual captions or translation-only. How to try it: 1) Install the extension 2) Google sign-in (required to link usage quota and prevent abuse) 3) Open a tab with audio → click Start in the extension → you’ll see live captions/translation Trial: everyone gets 20 minutes free to test it. Note on sign-in/privacy: I know sign-in adds friction. I use Google login only to associate usage quota with an account and to prevent abuse. The extension does not access your inbox/contacts. If an anonymous trial mode would significantly increase willingness to try, I’d love to hear that. If you try it and it fails or behaves oddly on a site, telling me the url + browser would help a lot. I’ll be here to answer questions and iterate quickly.
