Zwin – open-source XR windowing system for Linux and Meta Quest
Hi, I and my team just released the first beta of Zwin, a windowing system for XR. It can display multiple 3D apps simultaneously, as well as regular 2D Linux apps. It's fully open-sourced and currently supports Ubuntu/Arch Linux + Meta Quest 2/Pro. ...it's hard to describe VR systems with just a text. Here's a video demo: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aPeacvIrVMo (short one) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZEDEfEZB1w (full demo) In a nutshell, Zwin has following features. - Displaying existing 2D Linux (Wayland) apps and placing it freely inside VR - Opening multiple 3D windows simultaneously, which is not possible in existing VR systems - Instant switch between VR headsets & regular 2D screen This enables use cases such as: viewing 3D models (STL files) directly inside VR, using Blender on Wayland to edit them, and watching tutorial videos on YouTube inside Chrome at the same time, all without leaving VR. It also supports 2D screens, so you can put off the headset and continue working if you got tired. It's still in early beta, so there should be lots of bugs and problems. But it's open source so you can participate the development, or make your own 3D apps for Zwin if you're interested. I'm really glad if you check it out and tell us what you think!
