Baytyab – (Re)discover couplets in classical Persian poetry
I created this website some time ago, but I don't think I ever shared it widely. Baytyab, besides being a palindrome in the Dari transliteration, roughly translates to "couplet-finder". I've been learning Dari (and Pashto!) for most of my adult life as a second language, and classical poetry was always something that I had struggled with. I thought that if I ever came across a word I didn't know when reading a poem, it would be great to throw that word into a search to find other couplets that use it to get a better "feel" for the meaning in the classical context without having to crack open a dictionary. There is another mode I added that I like to use when playing an Afghan game with my wife called "baytjangi" (couplet-wars). In baytjangi, two people trade couplets, but your couplet has to begin with the last letter of the couplet the person you are playing with just shared. Obviously I'm not very good at this game so when I get stuck I like to just throw in the last word of the couplet my wife shared to get a couplet to allow us to keep going. This was my first time writing a website in pure HTML + CSS, and also my first time writing an RTL website. It was a great learning experience and I'm still very proud of this today.
